Case Study 1
Wessex are currently involved in the provisional design and requirements for 2 x 92 person, 120 mtr Corvettes, being designed for a Middle East country to act as seaward defence vessels, built to co-ordinate commercial maritime accidents and pollution control traffic management and aid to civil power.
The country concerned has already purchased a number of vessels from the UK, the most recent was some 16 years ago and which was highly successful. They were 83 mtrs with 76 persons on board capable of operating at sea for 5-7 days at a range of 2,500 nautical miles from their base. The only restrictions these vessels have is fuel and water. If this could be provided at sea their sea time could be extended by 200%. It is proposed to build the new ones in the South of England. The new ships will have the same roles and responsibilities as the old ships but with greater duration. They are expected to be at sea between 10-14 days with a 3,500 mile range.
They will also be capable of carrying two helicopters and render medical assistance within their operational range. We have been asked to provide the initial safety and navigational design for the outfit and in due course will be expected to provide a whole range of first outfit stores. This can include anything from domestic equipment, sheets, blankets, pots and pans to seamanship navigation safety equipment. The ship is able to maintain itself, produce its own water and power and the items we would expect to provide would be all the tooling of the spares, enabling the vessels to be mechanically self-sufficient. The quantity of equipment required would be in the region of about 1.3 million items costing some £13million.
Case Study 2
Provision for 6 Corvettes, 126 mtrs under construction in South East Asia for a local Government.
These vessels were originally designed and built by the leading Shipbuilder in Germany and are being assembled in-country. The Shipyards concerned are buying the majority of equipment they need from local sources. We have been asked to provide the equipment that is not manufactured in South East Asia, mostly from NATO sources and in general from the UK. This will include the onboard ship navigation equipment, the equipment enabling the ships to transfer fuel and water and a number of low technical but highly skilled manufactured items, many of which we will be manufacturing ourselves. Such items as Star Gloves, Navigational Optical Range Finders and a host of others.
Case Study 3
Similarly, where the vessels were also destined for South East Asia, 3 heavy duty Corvettes were designed and manufactured in the UK for the South East Asian area for local sea defence. These vessels have been designed for simple maintenance and longer sea duration. The vessels will be able to stay at sea, under slow speeds, for some 3 weeks. Regular supply and interchange of crews can take place with the ships own helicopter but they are able to support and maintain themselves with little assistance from shore.
Case Study 4
Recently two ’78-’83 version old frigates, no longer required by the UK, have been sold and regenerated and sold to a new up and coming Navy new to NATO. The ships were originally designed to assist convoys across the Atlantic, whereas now this is no longer a Western European necessity. The ships have become redundant for the UK. During the regeneration, while change of role was required, subsequently the range of equipment issued was modified and adopted. We at Wessex took a major part in the design of the replacement of this equipment, enabling the ships to become Control Frigates with a multi role function, with land, air and sea defence capability.
